Samsung recently announced its new flagship smartphones known as the Galaxy S8 and S8+, which are beautifully designed and have some very impressive specifications. Although the Galaxy S8 devices will not be available on shelves until April 21st, a number of reviewers have been able to test them out. Some of the tests that the Galaxy S8 and S8+ have been put through include speed, scratch, drop and water.
Speed Tests
YouTube channel XEETECHCARE conducted a speed test of the new LG G6 against the Samsung Galaxy S8. The Galaxy S8 booted up rapidly and topped the LG G6. The speed test also showed that the Galaxy S8 loaded up the Phone, Viber, Twitter, Instagram, Subway Surfers, Smash Hit and Color Switch apps faster than the LG G6. However, the LG G6 loaded up the Settings app faster. It’s worth mentioning that the LG G6 has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor — which is older than the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 in the Galaxy S8.
In a different speed test, YouTube channel EverythingApplePro compared the Samsung Galaxy S8 against the iPhone 7 Plus. One of the first things EverythingApplePro pointed out was that the new app animations in iOS 10.3 worked out in Apple’s favor for this test. In terms of gaming, the iPhone 7 Plus is slightly faster than the Galaxy S8. And the iPhone 7 Plus processed 4K video much faster than the Galaxy S8.
Surprisingly, all of the other apps were reset on the Galaxy S8 after it started processing the 4K video since “the video export demanded so many resources.” But running apps that are not as graphic-intensive like Snapchat, Instagram, Google Maps and Photoshop have comparable load times between the two devices.
Durability Test
The materials used to build the Samsung Galaxy S8 include durable aluminum alloy and Corning Gorilla Glass 5. Corning says that Gorilla Glass 5 survives “1.6-meter, shoulder-height drops onto hard, rough surfaces up to 80% of the time.” YouTube channel TechRax proved how resilient the Galaxy S8 is in the durability test above. It takes a lot of effort to crack the screen with a hammer and a knife.
Water Tests
The Galaxy S8 and S8+ feature IP68-rated water and dust resistance. The IP68 rating indicates that the Galaxy S8 and S8+ is water resistant up to 1.5 meters (4.92 feet) for 30 minutes. The iPhone 7 is IP67-rated water and dust resistant, meaning it can be submerged in 1 meter (3.28 feet) of water for up to 30 minutes.
In 3 feet of water at 3 minutes, both of the devices seemed to be working fine. But after 5 feet at 15 minutes, the iPhone 7 Home button stopped working even though the display was still functional. The Galaxy S8 was still completely functional so it dominated in this test.
Then tested the Galaxy S8+ and the iPhone 7 Plus in the Columbia River located in the Pacific Northwest. Both phones survived the 5-foot, 10-foot, 15-foot, 20-foot and 30-foot tests underwater. The iPhone 7 Plus even survived the 50-foot test, but the Galaxy S8+ did not.
